We are Hiring for the WATR Executive Director Role

WATR is looking for our next Executive Director. Katie Price, our Executive Director since June 2024, is unexpectedly needing to step back. We are thrilled with the progress we made under Katie and are very glad she will continue to work with WATR in a reduced capacity from ED as our Watershed Science Director.

“As WATR continues to grow, I’ve made the decision to step down as Executive Director in order to focus on some health priorities. I’m excited to continue serving the organization as Watershed Science Director, where I’ll be directly engaged in advancing WATR’s watershed science work and supporting key projects and partnerships. This transition marks an exciting next phase for WATR and its future leadership.” – Katie Price, outgoing Executive Director

Executive Director Job Description: Part-Time

The Watershed Association of the Tuckasegee River (WATR) is looking for a part-time Executive Director (ED) to lead our passionate team of volunteers and board members. This is an exciting opportunity to spearhead the growth of WATR’s fundraising, communications, and marketing efforts and drive our impact throughout the Tuckasegee Watershed.

Since our founding, WATR has become a respected authority and trusted voice for water quality in the region. We have a strong network of partners, including government agencies and other nonprofits, which provides a solid foundation for growth.

While the current fundraising base limits this to a part-time position, the board is committed to working with the incoming Executive Director to grow funding to support a full-time position and additional staff in the coming years. We are seeking a dynamic, mission-driven leader to partner with us on this journey.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fundraising and Development (approximately 60% of time spent):
As the main driver of WATR’s fundraising strategy, you will lead all grant writing efforts and cultivate relationships with donors. Fundraising will be the primary focus of this position for 2026.
  • Communications and Marketing (15%):
As the voice of WATR, you will create and execute a comprehensive communications and marketing plan, using various media to share our impact, engage supporters, and build a strong brand presence.
  • Board Partnership (10%):
You will work in close partnership with the board of directors to develop and implement a vision for growth, leveraging their expertise and passion to expand WATR’s influence and financial health.
  • Volunteer & Staff Management (15%):
It takes a village to get all this done. The ED will lead and inspire volunteers and staff to maximize our impact; this includes overseeing grant projects, data collection, and revitalization efforts.

Compensation & Growth Opportunity

$2,000 monthly stipend; potential for full-time role and increased compensation with fundraising success.

Who You Are: Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience successfully managing people, volunteers, and projects
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and an affinity for community engagement
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse personalities, age groups, education levels, and political perspectives

Communications & Technical Skills

  • Strong social media skills (Meta Business Suite, Mailchimp)
  • Working knowledge of digital management tools like Google Workspace
  • QuickBooks experience a plus

Environmental & Field Readiness

  • General understanding of watershed science, stream ecology, and river systems
  • Ability to “think geographically” about river systems (upstream/downstream impacts, sources of pollution, etc.)
  • Physical ability to participate in stream work and event setup
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle available for work use

Logistics

Flexible schedule, with occasional evenings and weekends (approximately 2–3 times per month) and a balance of office, field, and community outreach activities
